Robert “Pete” Gosmire, 89, of Canova passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Lake Norden Care Center in Lake Norden, South Dakota. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm, Sunday, July 16, 2017 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Howard, with burial at a later date. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday with a prayer service at 5 pm at the Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard. Robert “Pete” Gosmire was born in Canova on February 20, 1928 to Arthur and Hattie (Kruescher) Gosmire. Pete grew up on the family farm, was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Canova, and attended Burbank Country School through 8th grade and later attended Burbank High School, graduating in 1946. Pete played football and basketball throughout his high school career. After graduating, he worked on the family farm with his older brother, Howard. In 1950 Howard enlisted in the Army and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Pete took care of the farm until Howard’s return in 1952 when Pete and Howard began running the farming operation together again. The brothers had to grow up fast after their father died at a young age. They worked hard on their farm where they not only raised crops, but also raised pigs and chickens. Pete enjoyed fishing, playing softball, playing cards, and socializing. Pete and his brother, Howard, rarely missed a holiday gathering, wedding, anniversary, graduation, or any opportunity to visit with their family and many friends. Pete loved dogs and cared for many a stray cat. He was a loving uncle, cousin, and friend to so many and will be dearly missed. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Phyllis Bauer and Jessie Cordell, and most recently, his beloved brother and best friend, Howard Gosmire.
