Edward C. Poppen, 76, of Sycamore, Illinois formerly of Howard, South Dakota passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at the Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb, Illinois, after a courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 10-12 PM, Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Willoughby Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at Graceland Cemetery in Howard.
Edward was born December 24, 1940 at Howard, South Dakota to Emil and Betty (Miller) Poppen. He grew up in the area attending one year of country grade school near Winfred, South Dakota. Edward then attended Howard Grade and High School until 1957, this is when he entered the Army National Guard. Edward after his stint in the Guards he moved to Illinois. Ed was married to Carolyn Barber in 1996 at Sycamore, Illinois. The couple made their home there. Edward was a self-employed Cornwell Tool businessman, proudly serving his customers for 27 years. He was a faithful member of Sycamore Methodist Church, a member of Sycamore Kiwanis and the DeKalb Moose Lodge. Edward loved to tinker and was a handyman to many people. Edward was a NASCAR enthusiast and a wonderful husband and loving father.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Sycamore, IL; two sons: Jeff Poppen and Mark Poppen, a daughter Deb (Joe) Baird; two grandchildren: Jessi and Becca Baird; nine siblings: Charlotte Webber of Madison, SD; Connie (Dale) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD; Verne (Billie) Poppen of Cypress, TX; Larry (Luella) Poppen of Howard, SD; Judy (Mark) Sustad of Denver, CO; Denny (Rosie) Poppen of Madison, SD; Nyla (Doug) Larsen of Howard, SD; and Robert (Theresa) Poppen of Howard, SD; other relatives and friends. Edward was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law: Ivan Webber.
