Wallace Eugene Jacobson was born on December 30, 1935, at Canova, SD, to Kenhart and Alma (Voeltz) Jacobson. Wally was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Wally attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Howard High School in 1953. Wally joined the Army National Guard in 1951 and served for eight years. On October 30, 1956, he married the love of his life, Marie Feller, in Pipestone, MN. Wally and Marie were blessed with three children: Shirley, Sharon, and Steven.

Wally farmed in the Howard area all his life. Wally was an active member of the Howard American Legion and was active on the Miner County Weed Board. He also served on the Henden Township Board for numerous years. He and Marie were leaders of the Henden Future Farmers 4-H Club for many years. They were honored as the state 4-H Family of the Year in 1995. Wallace learned to cook at an early age, due to the loss of his mother when he was eighteen months old. Wally was a great cook and took great joy in baking Angel Food cakes for people’s birthdays and was always trying out new recipes. Wally was an excellent gardener and enjoyed canning tomatoes and his red cinnamon pickles. Wally loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He really enjoyed fishing with his grandkids. Children in the Howard area knew Wally as the Smarties Candy Man, as he always carried the candy in his pocket.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Shirley (Doug) Larson of Sioux Falls, SD, and Sharon (Todd) Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; and his son, Steve (Shawna) Jacobson of Howard, SD. Also, his 8 grandchildren: Heather Miller, Troy (Krystle) Miller, Andrea (Travis) Hatlestad, Christa (Alex) Coughlin; Brandon (Elora Mathias) Jacobson, Zachary Jacobson, Mason Jacobson, and Brittany Jacobson; his 5 great-grandchildren: Victoria and Owen Hatlestad, Kenzie and Kalli Coughlin, and Silas Miller. Wallace is also survived by several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

Wallace was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, his parents Kenhart & Alma Jacobson, brother Elwood, his step-mother Verna Jacobson, and his step-sister Vivian Hanson.
