Nadine Buttemeier Obituary

Nadine Buttemeier, age 97, of Howard, died Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society in Howard. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, May 7, 2021, at the Beach United Methodist Church in Howard. Burial will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday.

Nadine Jeanette Scott was born November 28, 1923, to Arthur and Florence (Morrison) Scott, on the Scott farm northwest of Fedora. She attended Fedora Consolidated School until the 3rd grade, a country school in Sanborn County through 8th grade, and eventually graduated from Fedora High School in 1941. She received her first grade teaching certificate from Black Hills Teachers College at Spearfish in 1943. She taught four years in the Lewis Country School north of Fedora.

On October 12, 1947, she married Ilo Z. Buttemeier of Roswell at the Congregational Church in Fedora. Together they raised three children, Myrna Jean, Ricky Merle, and Dianne Dorothy. In 1971, Nadine received her Bachelors Degree in Education from General Beadle State College in Madison. She substituted and taught in Artesian and Howard until Ilo died. He passed away in 1986 from injuries suffered in a tragic farm accident. Nadine remained on the farm for two more years before moving into Howard. She was a dedicated farm wife who loved cooking, canning, sewing, gardening, and raising chickens.

She was a member of the Beach United Methodist Church in Howard, the UMW and church circles. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was also a member of the Howard Civic League for a number of years.

Nadine enjoyed making and hand-quilting quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In her later years, she made and tied smaller quilts for mission work, the nursing home, school prom party prizes, and community raffles. She made sure her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had mementos of her and her mother’s things to treasure.

She was blessed to be able to live in her home until moving in to Whispering Winds Assisted Living in 2018. She came to live at the Good Samaritan Society in 2020. She was a lady of perseverance and kindness. She took time to do the little things such as picking flowers from her flower bed, putting them in a drinking glass, and sending them home with the grandchildren so they could enjoy them too. She loved her church family for their caring and loving ways. She enjoyed cards and visits from family, neighbors, and friends.

Nadine is survived by her three children, Myrna (Roger) Irwin of Britton, Ricky (Rita) of Howard, Dianne (Lee) Fischer of Winner; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Ardith Scott; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ilo; her parents; brother Audrey Scott and his wife Orvilla, brother Morris Scott, sisters Eleanor Standen and Lavina Nadeau, sister-in-law Gloria Faye and her husband Robert Truman; and several nephews and nieces.
