Kunigunde "Gunda" Gosmire, age 96, of Canova, died Friday, February 10, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Howard. Funeral services will be 10:30, Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the Willoughby Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, rural Canova. Visitation will be from 10-10:30 AM prior to services on Saturday.
Kunigunde Molzahn was born August 6, 1926, to Karl and Bertha (Voike) Molzahn, Lubinik, Poland. She attended school in Germany. During WWII, she worked in various factories making buttons, belts, and iron crosses for military uniforms. Gunda and her sister Freda survived the bombing of Dresden, Germany. They then moved to a refugee camp in Denmark for the remainder of the war. In June of 1950, Gunda and Freda left Germany and traveled to America on the Queen Mary. They then traveled to South Dakota where they joined their cousin. Gunda worked as a caretaker for a family in Canova before meeting the love of her life, Vernon.
Gunda and Vernon were united in marriage on May 22, 1951, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Canova, and eventually made their home on the family farm. Vernon passed away on September 17, 2002.
She is survived by her children, Dennis (Lois) Gosmire, Linda Karschner, Kathy Gosmire, Heidi (Brian) Willer, and Brent (Vicki) Gosmire; nine grandchildren, Melinda (Leigh) Talley, Sam (Dana) Gosmire, Thad Karschner, Crystal Karschner, Christopher Gosmire, Collin Gosmire, Dane Willer, Dillan Willer and friend Adysion Glanzer, and Tatum (Daniel) Thoelke; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vernon in 2002; one son-in-law; one great-great-grandchild; seven sisters; and four brothers.
