His first eight years of schooling occurred at Erickson Country School. He then transferred to Howard High School, where he graduated in 1945. Harley was drafted into the Army in 1945 to serve in Korea at the end of World War II. During this time he received the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan) Victory Medal Meritorious Unit Award. In 1978, Harley and Mavis moved to Howard. At that time he started C&S Electrical and Plumbing with Randy Schumaker. Harley always put work ahead of play, such as the time he made his out of state hunters unload a semi of lumber before he would let them go hunting on opening day of pheasant hunting season.Harley’s retirement time was spent helping on the farm and tinkering with electric motors. Harley enjoyed spending time with family and friends at reunions, holidays, and especially when fishing, hunting, and camping.
