Gloria Jean (Thompson) Smith, 68 of Winfred, SD passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at her residence. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Gloria was born on July 12, 1952 at Madison, SD to Andrew Ted and Phyllis Elaine Thompson. She attended elementary and some high school in Winfred before moving to the high school in Howard, SD and graduating in 1970.
Gloria was united in marriage to Donald Eugene Smith on September 2, 1972 at the Union Presbyterian Church, Winfred, SD. Two children were born of this union, Donald John and Michelle Jean.
Gloria was a stay-at-home-mom for the most of her life. However, she worked part-time at the Winfred Post Office and for Homecare Services caring for others. She had a huge heart and was an extremely giving person. She enjoyed cooking, crafting, riding horse, gardening and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Boy, did she ever make some of the best food!
As Gloria approached her 61st birthday, she began noticing her memory was not what it used to be. Shortly after her birthday, she was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. She spent the remainder of her life cherishing the memories she had remaining, and would often tell her family to “experience life now, because you may not remember it later.” Her family takes solace in the fact that, even in her last days, when her memory was at its worst, she never once forgot the ones she loved.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Don of Winfred, SD, a son, Donald of Winfred, SD and a daughter, Michelle(Rob) Smith-Dvorak of Orlando, FL, 4 grandchildren, Dantae, Justus, Adriana and Mercedes Smith-Dvorak, a sister, Cindy(Jim) Stansbury of Garretson, SD, and a sister-in-law, Georgia Thompson of Madison, SD and many other special family and friends.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Richard, a sister, Janice, and a half-brother, Larry.
