Robert Vernon Miller

Robert Vernon Miller, 94, of Rapid City formerly of Canova passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be 11am, Monday, February 11, 2019 at Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard. Burial with Military Rites will be in the Canova Cemetery, Canova. Visitation with family present will be Sunday, February 10, 2019 from 5pm to 7pm at the funeral home in Howard. Robert Vernon Miller was born May 23, 1924 to Vernon and Velva (Bunce) Miller. Bob graduated from Canova High School, was a member of the Canova Congregational Church, and lived nearly his entire life in the Canova area. Bob enlisted in the US Army during WWII and was an infantryman with the 1st Calvary Division in the Pacific Theater, proudly serving in General McArthur’s guard at the signing of Japan’s surrender at the wars end. Bob returned to Canova after the war and worked various jobs in the lumber yard, elevator, drove school bus and was a diversified farmer until his retirement. On January 24, 1947, he and Marie Lydia Hahn were married in Canova. To this union a son, Dennis, was born. Baseball, dances, and card parties along with large family get-togethers were his favorite activities in his younger day's. Dancing and card playing continuing as favorites through his final days. In 2006, following his wife’s (Marie) death, Bob relocated to be with his son Dennis and his family in Rapid City. Here he enjoyed many new friends, card players and dancing partners. Bob was a member of the Canyon Lake Senior Center where he could be found each day visiting, playing pool or playing a variety of card games, often ending the game as the winner or winning team member. Every Saturday night was dance night for Bob. He also was a member of the Freedom Motorcycle Church in Rapid City and the American Legion Post in Canova. Those grateful for having shared in his life include his son Dennis (Diane) Miller of Rapid City, SD; granddaughter Jackie (Myron) Anderson of Rapid City, SD; grandson Steve Miller of Sioux Falls, SD; great-granddaughter Britney (Hunter) LaCroix; great-grandson Blake Anderson; great-great-granddaughter Emerson Marie LaCroix; his brothers Duane Miller and Ronald (Joann) Miller both of Canova, SD; Harold (Nita) Miller of Lake Andes, SD; nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marie, sisters Glenda Callies, Beverly Rapp, a brother Gerald and a granddaughter Katherine Marie.
