Leon Louis Neises, 90, of Howard died peacefully surrounded by family, Sunday, December 2, 2018, under hospice care. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 am, Thursday, December 6, 2018, at St. Agatha Catholic Church, Howard, with burial and Military Rites in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Howard. Visitation will begin on Wednesday at 5pm with a Scripture service at 7pm, all at the catholic church in Howard.
Leon Louis Neises was born July 31, 1928, on a farmstead southeast of Howard to William and Mary (Leider) Neises. He attended grade school in Roswell and graduated from Burbank High School. After his graduation, Leon farmed with his father and drove truck for his brother, John. Leon then joined the Army and proudly served in the Korean Conflict. Leon was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Lila Jeannine (Knudson) on October 3, 1955. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Howard area. Along with farming Leon drove the school bus for the Howard School District. Leon was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Nels Pederson American Legion Post 145 in Howard. Leon enjoyed playing cards, dancing back in the day, putting puzzles together and watching his favorite baseball team the Minnesota Twins. Leon especially enjoyed his visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leon was a devoted father, grandfather, attending all their sporting events. He will be dearly missed by his family. Leon is survived by four children: Janie (Mike) Chambers of Sioux Falls, SD; Mark (Amy) Neises of Howard, SD; Nancy Jacobson of Howard, SD; Lynn (Scott) Hiltunen of Yankton, SD; 19 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister Delores Rasmussen of Howard, SD; a daughter-in-law LaVoy (David Nieses) Amundson; sisters-in-law Elaine Neises and Bonnie Burmeister, brother-in-law Perry Genzlinger and his special friend Tony Rydell, all of Howard, SD; other relatives and friends. Leon was preceded in death by wife Lila Jeannine (1985), sons David (2000), Bradley (2015), granddaughter Shannon Kidd (2001), brothers John and Jerry, sisters Margie Genzlinger, Phyllis Paradeis and Alice Kaufmann, three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, and four nephews.
