Elaine was born on June 15, 1926 on the family farmstead east of Howard, South Dakota to Arthur and Lillie (Liable) Genzlinger. Elaine grew up on the farm. She was baptized and confirmed in the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Howard. She attended and graduated from Howard High School in 1944. After high school Elaine worked at the Minor County Court House and Quinn Tascher Department Store prior to marrying John Neises.
On May 18, 1948 Elaine and John were married at the St Agatha Catholic Church in Howard. The couple spent their entire married life farming and raising cattle on their farm East of Howard. After the death of her husband, Elaine moved into town.
Elaine and John enjoyed entertaining. Elaine was known to host many holidays and card games often ran into early morning hours. Even though Elaine and John had no biological children of their own, they treated all their nieces and nephews like their own children often babysitting and caring for the family. Besides enjoying playing cards with family, Elaine loved to treat family to dinners at her house and later at the golf course and she always insisted in picking up the bill. Elaine was an avid bowler and golfer. Many remember her folding Mass brochures for church each week. She was a member of the Women’s Golf Association. We all know Elaine’s passion was the slot machines. She and John made many trips to Las Vegas where they usually got free rooms and food. Later Elaine was seen often at the Royal River Casino in Flandreau. She was known to treat many family members to steak dinners and drinks at the casino. Elaine will be remembered for her generosity, her determination, and fun-loving attitude.
