Alice Magdalena (Neises) Kaufmann

            Alice Magdalena Kaufmann, 94, of Howard died Friday, November 30, 2018, at Whispering Winds Assisted Living in Howard.   Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, Howard, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Howard. Visitation will begin Monday at 5pm with a Scripture Service to be said at 7pm, all at the catholic church, Howard.

            Alice Magdalena Neises was born on October 7, 1924, on a farm southeast of Howard to William and Mary (Leider) Neises.  When she was a small child, the family moved to a farm near Roswell where she attended grade school. The family then moved to a farm north of Epiphany and she graduated from Burbank High School in 1942.

            After graduation, Alice lived in Chicago, IL and worked at Montgomery Wards and The Merchandise Mart.  She returned to Howard in 1945 and worked at the telephone office.  

            Alice married Gilbert Kaufmann on February 9, 1950, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in Howard, SD.  The couple farmed in the Canova and Howard area for 52 years.   After Gilbert’s death, Alice moved to Howard and continued to enjoy working in her garden and canning produce, playing cards at Senior Citizens, attending daily Mass and participating in church activities, embroidery and reading.

            Alice is survived by 5 children, Cheryl Peters of Stickney, SD,  Mary and Charlie Beatch of Sioux Falls, SD; Dan and Beckie of Sioux Falls, SD, Alan and Cindy of Howard, SD, Gary and Lynne of Arlington , SD; 13 grandchildren Cathy Rounds, Sara Peters, Jon Beatch, Ben Kaufmann,  Brian Kaufmann,  Tom Beatch, Anne Peters, Nick Kaufmann, Kristen Mack, Amanda Barrios, Amy Lovett, Adam Kaufmann,  Kelsey Kaufmann; 21 great grandchildren, sister, Dolores Rasmussen; brother, Leon Neises; sister-in -laws Elaine Neises, Bonnie Burmeister, Vivian Kaufman; brother-in- law, Perry Genzlinger.

            Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert in 2002, an infant son in 1956, brothers John and Jerry, sisters Margie Genzlinger and Phyllis Paradies, son-in-law, Mark Peters, 3 brothers-in-law, 2 sister-in laws, 4 nephews.
