Vernon Ronald “Buck” Eggert, 82, of Howard, on Saturday, August 26, 2017, the Lord Jesus called His faithful servant, Buck, into the joys of eternal life in heaven, at the Good Samaritan Society, Howard. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 29, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Howard, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin Monday at noon with family present to greet friends from 5pm to 7pm at Willoughby Funeral Home, Howard. Vernon Ronald Eggert was born January 2, 1935 to Louis and Emma (Williams) Eggert in Howard at the residence he was living in at the time of his death. Vernon was raised in the Howard area, attending and graduating from the Howard High School in 1953, he then attended General Beadle College, Madison, graduating with a degree in Education in 1957, later Buck obtained his Master’s Degree in Administration from South Dakota State University in 1964. Vernon was united in marriage to the love of his life Marilyn Smith on August 1, 1959 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Howard. Buck's teaching career started with teaching two years at Colman High School, Colman. In 1959, Buck became a teacher and assistant coach at Howard High School for 41 years, he taught math and the sciences. As an assistant coach in 1964, Howard was crowned the Boys State basketball champions. Buck, during his senior year enlisted into the Army National Guard, Howard. While in the Guards in 1960, his unit was called up to duty during the Cuba crisis. Buck was a lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Howard and had served in numerous positions within the church. He was a past member of the Howard Fire Dept., serving for 32 years and was the Fire Chief for 28 of those years. Buck received many awards within the department. Buck kept active at the Howard Golf Course as the green’s keeper, calling this his summer job while teaching. After retiring, he became the Emergency Management Coordinator for Miner County and was involved with weather spotting storms and the Search & Rescue Team. Buck enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking, play cards, and watching his children and grandchildren in their activities. Those grateful for having shared in his life include his wife: Marilyn Eggert of Howard, SD; a daughter: Patty (John) Zuber of Gettysburg, SD; a son: Rob (Jill) Eggert of Howard, SD; his eight grandchildren: Steven, Christopher and Nichols Zuber, Hunter, Tanner, Taylor Eggert, Kayla Solinger and Karissa Busser, and a great-grandchild: Leonard Eggert; a brother: Kenneth Eggert of Litchfield, MN; two sisters: Ardyne (Fred) Rittershaus of Brookings, SD; Molly (Gaylord) Rasmussen of Howard, SD; other relatives and friends. Buck was preceded in death by his parents. All thanks and praise to God for the gift of Buck! Confident in the promises of God’s Word we await with anticipation the return of our Lord Jesus, the Day of Resurrection, and a glad reunion in heaven.
