Helen Alma Anna (Hageman) Hegdahl

Helen A. Hegdahl, 95, of Madison formerly of Howard, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison. Helen Alma Anna Hageman was born November 20, 1922, near Winfred, South Dakota to Herman and Hertha (Lebahn) Hageman, the youngest of three children and the only girl. Helen attended country school in Concord Township, graduating eighth grade from Youman Country School near Winfred. Helen later obtained her high school diploma. Helen met her husband Lloyd Hegdahl at a Luther League meeting at St. John Lutheran Church, Ramona, South Dakota. They were married April 7th, 1943 at Pipestone, Minnesota, while Lloyd was on leave from the U.S. Army. When he returned from the service, the couple made their home on a farm north of Howard. They attended the Belleview Lutheran Church and raised their three children. In November of 1992, they sold the farm and moved to Madison after 47 years of farming. Lloyd passed away February 28th, 2005. Helen was very active in Belleview Lutheran Church as a Sunday School teacher, Council Member and Ladies Aid Member/Officer. Helen also served on the Board of Directors for Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison. Helen loved to crochet, read, play cards and dance. After moving to Madison, she enjoyed being a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and was active in the Madison Senior Citizens Center. Helen moved to the Bethel Lutheran Home Community in July of 2009. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd of 62 years, her two brothers, Arnold and Floyd and their spouses, her sisters-in-law, Berdine Hegdahl, Beverly Albrecht and Eldred Langland Graham and their spouses and a son-in-law, Jerry Potter. Those morning her loss are her three children, Lloyd (Becky) Hegdahl of Ralston, NE; Bonnie (Gary) Callies and Marcene (Tom) Johnson both of Madison, SD; four grandchildren: Travis (Leatha) Potter, Tim (Cindy) Potter, Elizabeth (Rick) Prusha, Nathan (Tiffany) Hegdahl, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren: Sean Potter, Andrew Potter, Isaac Prusha and one on the way, seven step-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.  

In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be directed to Bethel Lutheran Home or the Belleview Memorial Fund.
